Waitress fired after getting $4,400 tip from happy customer

There is a significant discussion surrounding the practice of tipping servers, and while opinions on this custom vary, it is undeniable that tipping is a fundamental aspect of restaurant culture in the United States.

Personally, I was taught to always tip my server. Many waitstaff rely on tips to support themselves, and although I do not believe that employers should be permitted to underpay their employees and shift the responsibility onto customers, this is unfortunately the current practice.

Regardless, it is reasonable to assert that nearly all servers merit the tips they receive. In 99 percent of instances, they work diligently to guarantee customer satisfaction, and any additional income they earn as a result should rightfully belong to them.

However, reports indicate that a waitress at the Oven & Tap in Arkansas was terminated after receiving an enormous tip from a table she served.

Ryan Brandt was left in shock when, in 2021, she was presented with a $4,400 tip from a group of business executives. Unfortunately, her initial excitement quickly turned to disappointment when she was dismissed by the Oven & Tap restaurant shortly thereafter.

One of the executives at the table, Rebecca Soto, shared a video on Instagram capturing the moment Brandt was given a substantial amount of cash for her services.

Soto described the touching video with the words: “I feel honored to have participated in something so beautiful and generous. To be able to bless someone else without having known them beforehand.

“Having been blessed myself, it is a joy to pay it forward and extend blessings to another.

“May God bless all those who contributed and the servers who benefited from it. I pray that it may be multiplied and positively influence their lives.”

In the footage, the evening’s host, Grant Wise (shown above), is seen presenting the cash to Ryan, stating: “Everyone at this table has contributed or tipped $100 for you, as well as for the other waitress who unfortunately had to leave due to illness.

“We also shared this on our social media platforms, and we received quite a bit more money. Therefore, we are giving you a total of $4,400 to share with the other girl who took care of us.”

Ryan, overwhelmed with joy and tears, expressed her gratitude to Grant and the table, but there was an unexpected twist that she did not anticipate.

The server informed KNWA News: “I was told that I needed to give my cash to my shift manager, and I would only be taking home 20 percent.”

She went on to explain that she had been working at Oven & Tap for over three years and had never been instructed to surrender her tips before.

Upon learning of the situation, Grant Wise quickly requested the money back. He then personally returned it to Ryan outside the restaurant, ensuring that his original gift reached the intended recipient.

However, upon returning to her workplace, Ryan discovered that she had been terminated for accepting the money.

“It was heartbreaking,” she remarked. “I had borrowed a considerable amount for student loans. Most of them were paused due to the pandemic, but they will resume in January, and that is a harsh reality.”

Wise and his kind-hearted colleagues initiated a GoFundMe campaign for Ryan, which rapidly raised $8,700 within just a few days.

Oven & Tap, on the other hand, released a statement regarding the situation, asserting that they had “honored” the request made by Wise’s table for the tips to be allocated to Ryan and her colleague.

“Following their meal, this sizable group of patrons asked that their gratuity be directed to two specific servers,” the restaurant stated.

“We completely honored their request. Out of respect for our esteemed team members, we refrain from discussing the specifics related to the termination of an employee.”

I am not sure about your perspective, but I believe there is something quite suspicious occurring if this establishment attempted to withhold Ryan’s tip.
