As the current government’s crackdown on transgender athletes goes on, Lia Thomas, a transgender athlete, has lost her titles at a US university. President Donald Trump has openly shared his views on gender.
His administration has moved forward with plans to prohibit transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports. The U.S. Department of Education has stated that it supports this idea.
Some cisgender female athletes have protested against this decision. Athletes in sports like fencing and disc golf are part of this movement, arguing that neither sport has any significant advantage based on gender.
Following a federal investigation, Lia Thomas, who is 26 years old, was also banned from UPenn. The university has apologized to athletes who had previously lost titles to Thomas. They have taken away Thomas’ titles, and their website now acknowledges the participants who have won in her absence.

The website now states, “Following the eligibility rules that were in place at the time, Lia Thomas broke program records in the 100, 200, and 500 freestyle events during the 2021-22 season.”
J. Larry Jameson, the President of the University, mentioned, “Although Penn’s policies during the 2021-2022 swim season followed NCAA eligibility rules, we recognize that some student-athletes faced disadvantages due to these rules. We understand this and will apologize to those who felt they had a competitive disadvantage or experienced anxiety because of the policies that were in place.”
Additionally, letters were personally sent to athletes who competed against Thomas. Jameson informed them that the school had kept up with changes to the policy, which had seen significant updates earlier this year when Donald Trump began his second Presidential term.
In February, the NCAA revised its policy for transgender athletes, restricting participation in women’s sports to those assigned female at birth.
Jameson stated, “We are committed to maintaining a respectful and welcoming environment for all our students. However, we also need to follow federal requirements, including executive orders and NCAA eligibility rules, so our teams and student-athletes can participate in competitive intercollegiate sports.”
Linda McMahon, the education secretary, referred to this change as a win for women and girls in a statement she released.
She said, “The Department praises UPenn for addressing its past wrongs against women and girls, and we will keep fighting hard to ensure Title IX (which prohibits sex-based discrimination in schools) is applied correctly and enforced to the fullest extent of the law.”
