This might be why you wake up between the hours of 3 and 5am

This could be the reason you find yourself waking up between 3 and 5am.

Getting a full night’s sleep without interruptions seems to be pretty uncommon, but it’s actually necessary if you want to be fully productive the next day without feeling exhausted.

A lot of people believe that just going to bed at the right time will ensure a good night’s sleep, yet they often wake up between 3:00am and 5:00am. This can lead to issues, especially if someone struggles to fall back asleep.

However, the fact that many people wake up during this time isn’t just a coincidence or bad luck. There’s actually a reason behind this pattern…

The hours from 3:00am to 5:00am are sometimes called the hour of the wolf, named after the psychological horror film by Swedish director Ingmar Bergman.

“The hour between night and dawn… when most people die, sleep is deepest, nightmares are most vivid. It’s the time when those who can’t sleep are tormented by their greatest fears, when ghosts and demons are at their strongest. The hour of the wolf is also when most babies are born,” Bergman noted.

As Professor Birgitta Steene explains, the term comes from Swedish folklore, where the “hour of the wolf” refers to the period between 3:00am and 5:00am.

This time is thought to be linked with a rise in both deaths and births. It’s also exactly when the body often goes into its deepest sleep, which is why its functions can be so impacted by it.

In folklore, the witching hour, or the devil’s hour, is a nighttime phase associated with supernatural events. People believe that during this time, witches, demons, and ghosts are said to appear and have their strongest power.

The hour of the wolf

For those who can sleep normally, the hour of the wolf signifies the time when sleep is at its deepest. However, for those who wake up, it supposedly marks the moment when feelings of anxiety are at their highest.

The body’s circadian rhythm (the 24-hour cycle of bodily functions) usually aligns with the sun’s rise and fall, meaning that things like body temperature, blood pressure, and metabolism decrease at night.

Around 4:00 AM, these functions are at their lowest, as this is when the body has reached its natural rest phase. If you struggle with anxiety, though, it’s during this time that those feelings can become stronger, which is why you might find yourself waking up.
