Online user finds creepy object hanging from ceiling

A viral Reddit post showing something dangling from a ceiling sent the internet into a frenzy, leaving thousands of viewers laughing, cringing, and wildly speculating over the mysterious object that terrified netizens when it started to “wiggle and move.”
On April 15, a user on the internet posted a photograph on the well-known subreddit, “What is it?” seeking assistance in identifying a dark, stringy, hairless object that was protruding through a narrow opening in the ceiling panel of his residence.
Accompanying the image, the original poster (OP), who uses the username Takuraiii_, provided fellow Redditors with the eerily casual caption: “Noticed this sticking out from my ceiling – what is it?”
Within a few hours, the post garnered over 35,000 upvotes and numerous comments. Redditors from diverse backgrounds, including pest control specialists and casual observers, came together for a lively session of astonished identification, bizarre theories, and a plethora of jokes.
Ceiling invader
As is typical on Reddit, the discussion thread rapidly evolved.
After the original poster (OP) clarified that “It moves so it’s probably not dead,” users scrutinized the specifics – color, texture, the slight taper – and shared their opinions on the disconcerting image of the mischievous ceiling intruder.
“Rat expert here (no official degree, but I’ve seen An American Tail at least six times),” begins one humorous user, referencing the 1986 animated movie featuring a family of mice. “This could be a tail, yes…but it could also be a decoy. Call in backup. Infrared. Night vision. I want eyes on every crumb. We’re not just dealing with any rodent. We’re dealing with a professional.”
Citing another animated film that features a rodent, a second user remarked, “Sir…. that’s a rat’s tail. Not the Ratatouille cute Remy rat. That’s a NYC kind of rat that will fight you over dinner.”
“Lick it. If it looks like a rat, tastes like a rat…” proposes another. In response to that suggestion, one Redditor comments, “Poke it with a stick and lick the stick instead.”
However, not everyone was persuaded that it was a rat.
“Opossum, or an armadillo,” writes another, or “a giant wall lizard.”
Push, pull or tickle
Others proposed increasingly ridiculous theories and solutions for identifying its nature.
“It’s merely a shadow. There’s no need for concern,” one individual commented, while another advised the original poster to “Simply push it up and disregard it.”
A third person suggested, “Have you considered tickling it? Perhaps it will retract and become out of sight, out of mind.”
Several users recommended that the poster “should certainly pull it.”
“How could you possibly refrain from pulling it?” one internet user inquired, leading the OP to respond, “It has those [tiny] hairs protruding from it; there’s no way I’m handling it with my bare hands.”
‘Incinerate the residence’
Others were, understandably, quite unsettled. “I would simply incinerate the residence,” one user humorously remarked – a sentiment shared by several others.
“Hopefully, you can now vacate, list [and] sell the house before that odor becomes overwhelming,” another commented regarding the object possibly being a deceased rat lodged in the ceiling.
However, it was not lodged – it began to “wiggle and move.” Shortly thereafter, the OP stated: “It has vanished now.”
“OP, are you not panicking?! I have the heebie-jeebies for you,” remarked one netizen concerning the unidentified occupant.
Another Reddit user cautioned, “It’s merely out of view; it’s certainly not gone.”
Mystery solved
Within 24 hours, the author provided an update, informing fellow Redditors that through a process of elimination, the tail-like object was not associated with a lizard, a possum, or an armadillo – nor was it a “tampon pull string.”
“After a significant number of comments suggesting that it is a rat’s tail, I can now confirm that it is indeed a rat’s tail…I will be contacting an exterminator shortly to appropriately address the situation. Thank you all!” the inquisitive online user stated, adding, “Someone from the comments mentioned, ‘When there is one, there is a hundred you can’t see.’ I sincerely hope that is not the case.”
However, when one is present, it is probable that more exist, as rats are highly social animals and “prefer living in groups,” as noted by PBS Nature.
Unwanted roommates
While the post provided some amusement, it also highlighted a serious concern: concealed rodent infestations within residential properties.
Rodents such as rats and mice frequently occupy crawlspaces, attic insulation, and wall voids – remaining entirely unnoticed until they leave behind evidence, such as droppings, scratches, or, in the case of the original poster; a tail appearance.
Moreover, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) cautions that “Rodents can carry numerous diseases that can be transmitted directly or indirectly to humans.”
One of these diseases is hantavirus, a rare yet potentially deadly illness that resulted in the death of Gene Hackman’s wife Betsy Arakawa in February 2025.
How to deal with an infestation
“You might not encounter a mouse or rat unless there is a significant infestation,” states the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). However, there are several indicators that can help you identify if your home is being occupied by rodents:
- Rodent droppings
- Nesting material
- Signs of chewing on food packaging
- Holes chewed through walls and floors
- Stale smells
A single tail was all it took to transform an ordinary ceiling into Reddit’s most peculiar mystery of the week. From amusement to genuine apprehension, this one image captured the attention of the internet and served as a reminder to occasionally glance upwards – as you never know what might be lurking above you.
