King Charles ‘in tears’ after emotional talk with Princess Anne

King Charles is still doing his royal responsibilities even while getting treatment for cancer. He became king after his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died in 2022, and his reign has had a tough beginning. This is partly due to the health problems in the Royal Family and the ongoing issues with his son, Prince Harry.
Although Charles, Camilla, Prince William, and Kate Middleton are the most visible members of the Royal Family, they aren’t the only ones. Charles’ sister, Princess Anne, is also said to be very important in helping the king however she can.
Charles and Anne may not see eye to eye on how the Royal Family should move forward, but their bond and support for each other will always remain strong. Recently, it was reported that Charles got emotional and even cried when Anne shared news about her royal future.
King Charles and Princess Anne have had a close relationship throughout their lives. With just 21 months between them, they grew up together at Buckingham Palace, raised by their parents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, and have always been there for each other since they were kids.
When Charles became king in 2022, Anne was right there to back him up, and it looks like she has no intention of stepping back. Even after a serious accident last year that put her in the hospital with a concussion, the 74-year-old quickly returned to her royal responsibilities once she was better.
Over the years, Charles and Anne have participated in many royal events together. Anne even has a cute nickname for her brother, calling him “old bean” at one point.
Anne is recognized as one of the hardest-working members of the Royal Family, earning the nickname “workhorse” from royal reporters Roya Nikkhah and Kate Mansey of The Times. Recently, she traveled to South Africa for her royal duties and talked about the accident she had last year.
“The Princess Royal mentioned that she still doesn’t remember anything about the incident at her Gatcombe Park estate that led to her five-night hospital stay. She has been speaking to the media during her trip to South Africa,” according to Gloucestershire Live. “We always refer to her as the workhorse of the Royal Family. I think she would appreciate that title, especially since she loves horses and working hard.”
King Charles & Princess Anne’s incredible bond
In a January interview with the Press Association, Anne talked about her future in the royal family, saying she has no plans to step back from her royal responsibilities anytime soon. She mentioned that retiring “isn’t really an option.”
“I don’t think there’s a retirement plan for this kind of life,” the Princess Royal said, according to the BBC. “It really isn’t part of the deal, no.”
When speaking with Fox, some royal experts shared their thoughts on Anne’s commitment to the Crown. King Charles has been focused on reducing the number of active royals, but Anne has previously expressed that she thinks that’s not a good idea. In an interview before Charles became king, Anne explained that cutting down the monarchy would be challenging.
“Well, I think the idea of ‘slimming down’ was mentioned when there were more people involved. It doesn’t seem like a smart move from my perspective, I would say. I’m not really sure what else we can do,” Anne told CBC.
Since Queen Elizabeth’s passing, a few other senior royals have also stepped back from their official roles. Harry and Meghan famously left the Royal Family for good, and Prince Andrew had to give up his position as a senior working royal after the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.
During the interview, Princess Anne was also asked if there are discussions about “relevance” within the Royal Family. She responded, “That kind of talk happens everywhere. It’s not a conversation I would usually have. I think it’s definitely a time when that discussion is needed.”
Princess Anne’s lifelong dedication to the Royal Family
Anne pointed out that the monarchy, along with the constitution, offers a level of long-term stability that is really hard to find in other ways.
She mentioned that her family sees their role as supporting this stability. They hope their efforts help the monarchy show continuity, not just in interest but also in service and understanding of how people in communities want to live.
Anne wrapped up by saying that they often get to see communities and the amazing people who give their time generously, which is something that the media doesn’t always show.
British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard shared with Fox that since the monarchy has had to reduce its size recently, Anne’s statement about not being able to step down is even more relevant.
Chard said, “How can Princess Anne retire? The smaller monarchy really needs her. Her sharp mind is ideal for her work with over 300 charities, organizations, and military groups in the U.K. and beyond. She has been providing great value since her first public appearance at 18.”
“She is back hitting the trail again”
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams pointed out that Princess Anne clearly disagrees with King Charles’ idea of a smaller monarchy. She believes it’s already been reduced without the Sussexes and Prince Andrew. It’s not surprising that the hardest-working royal has no plans to step back. Senior royals usually keep working.
Princess Anne’s accident last year wasn’t the only challenge for the Royal Family in 2024. King Charles was diagnosed with cancer early in the year, and in March, Kate Middleton revealed she was also battling the illness.
While Kate is now cancer-free, Charles will continue his treatment into 2025. It’s still uncertain how many royal duties he can handle in the upcoming months, but he seems to be in good spirits.
Prince William called 2024 “brutal” and possibly “the hardest year” of his life. For Princess Anne, returning to work was very important. Royal expert Ian Pelham Turner told the NY Post that Anne is the most dependable member of the Royal Family and was determined to “carry on” and return to her duties as soon as she could after her concussion.
“When she had her unfortunate accident with a horse, many thought this would end her service,” Pelham Turner said.
“However, after taking time off to recover, she is back and stronger than ever. Her strong work ethic is a shining example, just like her mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II. She has taken on many roles alongside her brother, the king, who has been mostly out of action.”
Princess Anne “determined not to retire”
The royal expert shared that Princess Anne is a straightforward royal who doesn’t tolerate foolishness. She serves as a role model for other royals, raising the standard for hard work.
Helena Chard also mentioned that Princess Anne is a reliable family member who gives wise advice. Notably, she has taken Princess Charlotte under her wing.
“They have a strong connection, share many interests, and enjoy spending time together. Princess Charlotte might also inherit the title of The Princess Royal from Princess Anne,” she explained. “Anne understands what will be expected of Charlotte in the future. She sees a lot of her younger self in Charlotte, making her the ideal mentor to guide Charlotte. Charlotte will support her brother, Prince George, just like Princess Anne has supported her brother, King Charles.”
So, what makes Princess Anne the most hardworking member of the Royal Family? British royal expert Hilary Fordwich believes it’s because of her late parents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.
“Anne is determined to keep working and not retire,” Fordwich said. “The younger royals know better than to cross ‘Auntie Anne.’ They could really learn from her commitment to her responsibilities, which is what made Queen Elizabeth II so beloved.”
King Charles ‘broke down in tears’ when discussing the future with Princess Anne
King Charles and Princess Anne share a lifelong bond that goes beyond just being siblings. Anne has always been Charles’ closest friend and trusted advisor, and she isn’t afraid to express her true feelings when they talk. This includes both personal and work-related topics.
Even though King Charles is the king, he has a special affection for his sister. As her brother, he genuinely wants the best for her. Recently, it was reported that he became emotional and cried during a conversation they had.
According to an unnamed royal aide speaking to Women’s Day Magazine, Charles feels mixed emotions about Anne continuing her royal duties. He is “thrilled” that she isn’t stepping back, but he also worries that she might feel pressured to keep working because of his health issues.
The aide mentioned, “Camilla may be the love of his life, but Anne is his most trusted and dependable friend. She’s the only one who can tell him hard truths and help him stay focused.”
The source added, “Their talk was very emotional for Charles, and he did shed tears over her unwavering loyalty to him. Privately, he is just so happy that she will be by his side through everything.”
