Heartbreak strikes twice: Influencer mourns youngest child after losing 9-year-old daughter

Influencer Melissa Mae Carlton and her husband Tom Carlton have experienced an unimaginable tragedy with the passing of their daughter Molly on Christmas Day this year, merely a year after they lost their 9-year-old daughter Abigail.

“On Christmas morning, our precious Molly girl, along with her older sister Abi, were reunited,” Melissa shared on Instagram on December 26. “This is the only thing that provides me with even a slight sense of comfort. Molly missed her sister profoundly.”

The couple, who are also parents to son Harry and daughter Lily, expressed that they were “devastated” and “in disbelief.”

“We are exhausted and shaken after a day filled with trauma and heartbreak,” Melissa stated. “I feel numb; I cannot yet come to terms with the reality of this situation. I am not prepared for this pain.”

She expressed that the level of love, support, and prayers her family has received has been truly overwhelming.

“I am fearful of what our future holds now,” she added. “My heart aches for our children.”

“Last night, amidst tears, Harry shared with me that when we boarded the plane to Arizona on Monday, Molly leaned over and expressed her desire to be with Abi,” Melissa recounted. “Through his sobs, he said, ‘She got what she wanted.'”

Melissa conveyed that although the family has not yet received an official cause of death for Molly, they do have some insights as doctors suspect that both of their daughters may be affected by the same genetic condition.

“I am reluctant to provide a medical update at this stage since we still lack an official diagnosis. However, I believe it is crucial to inform people that we do have some answers this time,” Melissa stated in an update on Instagram. “The doctors suspect that Molly had a genetic heart condition and believe this may also be true for Abi.”

Melissa said she hopes sharing her daughters’ stories might help other families affected by SUDC.

She clarified that Molly was under observation in the hospital prior to her passing. This provided doctors with insights that the family lacked when Abigail fell ill. Molly’s hospitalization enabled her condition to be monitored closely, which was not feasible in Abigail’s situation.

Despite the prompt actions of paramedics and medical personnel, doctors indicated that certain cardiac incidents in young children can be lethal even with immediate intervention. Melissa expressed her hope that additional genetic testing will yield answers for their family and assist other parents in recognizing potential inherited risks at an earlier stage.

“We have been informed that even a minor illness could potentially trigger a sudden cardiac incident,” she stated. “We were in the most favorable environment, with everything aligned for optimal conditions and the best possible outcome. Her small body fought valiantly. However, we have been advised that this type of cardiac incident is, in the majority of cases, not survivable.”

“I am hopeful that we will receive more answers soon and will pursue further genetic investigations for our family now that we may have a clearer path to follow,” she concluded. “We are thankful for each and every one of you.”
