George Lopez’s wife sacrificed an organ for her famous husband

Being married to a Hollywood star can be tough, but some manage to make it work.

Ann Serrano, however, gave everything — including one of her organs — for her famous husband, only to be betrayed.

Ann Serrano might not be a name that stands out to you right away, but she definitely shouldn’t just be known as “the wife of a celebrity.” Ann has made a name for herself as both an actress and a producer. Some of you may recognize her from Arrested Development, and she even had a role in an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Besides her career, she’s also a loving mom to a daughter she has with a famous and groundbreaking actor. The couple met while casting for a movie, which was Ann’s first casting job. They hit it off and got married in September 1993. Three years later, they welcomed a beautiful daughter named Mayan.

For a long time, their well-known marriage seemed strong, but everything changed in the early 2000s when her famous husband got a terrible diagnosis.

Doctors informed him that his kidneys were failing because of a genetic condition, and he needed a transplant to live. Timing was crucial, but he postponed the surgery for a year, filled with fear that the news about his condition would get out to the media. He didn’t want their then 9-year-old daughter to read about it in the tabloids.

Even though he was a public figure, he managed to keep his illness a secret for quite a while. But eventually, it became clear he needed help. That’s when Ann stepped in, offering something incredible — her own kidney.

For her, it was an easy choice, as she once mentioned in an interview.

“It’s amazing to be able to help another human being in this way. You’re giving the gift of life,” she said.

The surgery went well, and the famous actor was fortunate that his body accepted the new organ. To make things even better, he lost 45 pounds as his health got better. Thanks to Ann’s kindness, they were looking forward to more happy years together. But that’s not how things ended up.

So, who was this man? None other than George Lopez, best known for starring in his hit sitcom The George Lopez Show. Today, he has grown into one of our most beloved comedians and in 2005, he was named one of ”The Top 25 Hispanics in America” by Time magazine.

Abandoned by his parents

George Lopez was born in 1961 in Los Angeles to a Mexican migrant worker, and he definitely didn’t have an easy beginning. His father left when he was only two months old, and then his mother abandoned him at the age of 10, so he was brought up by his grandmother.

As a kid, George was really shy and kept to himself a lot, often getting lost in his own thoughts. Nobody would have guessed that he would grow up to be a star in Hollywood, but George took his tough childhood and turned it into something funny, using his struggles to create jokes that people everywhere could relate to.

“I started to find my comedic voice in the early ’90s, and it revolved around my grandmother as kind of a muse,” George once said.

“She was really something. No cars could go from zero to 60 as fast as my grandmother could go from calm to upset.”

Discovered by Sandra Bullock

Not long after, Sandra Bullock came to George because she was upset about how few Hispanic people were shown on TV.

ABC agreed with her, and in 2002, George became one of the rare Latinos to lead a sitcom. The show did really well, attracting almost 10 million viewers in its first season. George was not just the star; he also helped create, write, and produce the show.

Even though it was popular, the show got canceled in 2007, which made George unhappy. He famously said to the Los Angeles Times, “TV just became really, really white again.”

Professionally, it was a big loss, but at the time, George had just overcome a life-threatening situation.

Secret surgery

On April 19, 2005, he was brought into Cedars-Sinai Medical Center using the name “Tom Ace,” not knowing if he would survive.

Thanks to Ann’s brave choice, he did.

Both of them had surgery in rooms right next to each other, and by the next day, their daughter was there to see them at the hospital. Ann mentioned that she didn’t feel any different after losing one kidney.

“There was no doubt. When you find yourself in a situation where you might lose someone you care about, it’s an easy choice to make.”

However, even after all they faced together, their marriage didn’t hold up. After 18 years of being married, they announced their split. Ann started the divorce process in 2010, saying there were “irreconcilable differences,” and it was completed in 2011.

Cheating on his wife

Ann has openly talked about the problems in her marriage, mentioning that George’s troubled childhood played a role. George admitted in an interview with Piers Morgan that he was partly responsible for their breakup, even saying that some of the criticism he faced after their divorce was fair, especially since Ann had once saved his life.

To people looking in from the outside, Ann and George seemed to have everything, but things were not as great as they appeared. About six years into their marriage, things changed. George cheated on Ann, and they had to deal with it directly.

Ann, wanting to keep their family together, pushed for couples therapy because she wanted their daughter to have her dad around. George seemed to get how serious his mistakes were, and for a time, it looked like he had changed. But Ann made it clear — if he cheated again, their marriage would be over.

Sadly, it happened again, and this time it was very public.

Ann discovered the painful truth by reading it in a tabloid. In that moment, she realized that the man she loved and supported was living a secret life.

“It was a really tough way to find out,” Ann shared on TheHourGlass Podcast in 2024.

This was something Ann could not accept, and she made the hard choice to file for divorce. Not surprisingly, Mayan stood by her mother, helping her through the tough times.

Years later, Mayan talked more about her parents’ relationship on TikTok, directly asking them why they got divorced. Ann replied, “Your dad didn’t understand that when you get married, you have to stop dating other people.”

A year later, Mayan, who is also pursuing a career in acting, shared another video with the caption, “He cheated. She divorced him. We kept almost everything.”

Went into therapy

George has been pretty quiet about the details, but he has shown that he feels bad for the pain he caused, especially to his daughter. They didn’t talk for many years.

Eventually, George went to therapy with her to sort out their problems, admitting it was “awkward,” but it was something they needed to do.

“You have to take responsibility for the trauma you’ve caused,” George said. “For the first time in my life, I said, ‘Yeah, I’m responsible for this and I’m going to spend the rest of my life fixing it.'”

“Being a father is really special,” he told ET, adding: “Being estranged from your child is the worst thing ever, and for the first time in my life, I admitted my mistakes. I’m lucky that Mayan let me back into her life, and a bit of the show is about that.”

Father and daughter eventually healed their relationship, which turned into something really special. Not only did they make up, but they also transformed their personal struggles into art. Now, they co-star in the NBC comedy Lopez vs. Lopez, a show that reflects their own journey of fixing a complicated relationship.

Surprisingly, despite everything, Ann and George have a good relationship. A decade later, Mayan even asked them if they still loved each other, and both said they did. Ann called George her “husband and friend,” while George simply said, “I love Ann.”
