Country singer Conner Smith was behind the wheel of a truck that hit an elderly woman crossing a Nashville street over the weekend.

Law enforcement officials said that Smith, who is 24 years old, was driving a Chevy Silverado in Nashville on Sunday, June 8, when he didn’t give way to a pedestrian crossing the road. The pedestrian, 77-year-old Dorothy Dobbins, was hit by the truck. She was taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center, where she unfortunately passed away.

According to a statement from Metro Nashville Police, Smith did not “yield the right of way to the pedestrian,” but he was not under the influence at the time of the incident. The singer known for “I Hate Alabama” is not facing any charges right now.

Worrick G. Robinson, an attorney for Conner Smith, issued a statement on behalf of his client, saying:

“On June 8th, Mr. Smith was involved in a car accident that tragically claimed a life. His heart goes out to Ms. Dobbins’ family during this incredibly difficult time. Mr. Smith continues to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.”
